For Patients in Sahuarita, Arizona

Your First Dental Appointment

To prepare for your first appointment, ensure that you send your health records and medical history information. You can also verify your insurance coverage with our office. We also encourage you to prepare questions you may have about your oral health to discuss with Dr. Morris.

There are multiple things to expect on your first visit to our Sahuarita dental office

Examination

Before your cleaning, we will carefully examine your smile, looking for signs of decay, oral cancer, impacted teeth, and more. We may also recommend further treatment based on this examination.

Professional Dental Cleaning

Our hygienists offer thorough dental cleanings. Using stainless steel tools, our hygienists remove plaque and tartar from the teeth and gums. Plaque is a bacterial film that can build up in the mouth. Over time, plaque forms into tartar. It is normal to feel scraping during this scaling process as the hygienist removes bacteria from the smile. Then, they will brush with a gritty toothpaste to scrub the teeth. Finally, they floss and rinse the teeth and gums. Our hygienists will also use the Gemini hygiene laser, which allows them to treat bacteria during cleaning painlessly. This laser decontaminates the smile by targeting and removing harmful bacteria that cause gum disease and tooth decay.

Dental X-Rays

We will not take x-rays at every appointment. However, we will take x-rays on a regular basis to track developments in your oral health. Our office uses digital x-rays that allow us to view the teeth, gums, jaw, and nerves. Detailed x-rays make it easier to diagnose problems we cannot see with the naked eye.

Oral Cancer Screening

This screening can be a lifesaving routine treatment for many patients. Oral cancer is a serious problem marked by red or white plaques, sores, and bumps in the mouth. When looking for signs of oral cancer, we look for sores and patches inside the mouth. We will check the roof of your gums, tongue, and lymph nodes. Heavy tobacco or alcohol use also contribute to oral cancer.

Common Questions to Ask Your Dentist

We recommend that you ask Dr. Morris or a team member any questions you have about your oral health and hygiene. Some of the best questions to ask include:

How is my dental health?

After cleaning and examination, Dr. Morris will have a good idea of your current oral health needs. He will tell you if you require any additional treatment and how to care for your smile at home. Some patients may require more than two dental visits a year and specific products to maintain their oral health.

What does this change in my oral health mean?

Please let Dr. Morris know if you have any changes in your oral health, including but not limited to the following:

  • Tooth pain
  • Bleeding gums
  • Mouth sores
  • Tooth discoloration

He can examine your smile and provide a recommendation at home or in his office.

How can I improve my smile?

Dr. Morris can suggest cosmetic treatments as needed to address crooked, damaged, or discolored teeth. He may recommend cosmetic care if he notices a problem during your examination.  Otherwise, you can discuss your cosmetic goals if you are interested in one or more of our treatments.
