Treatment with Invisalign

Before treatment, we take dental x-rays and images of the smile to map out how the teeth shift with Invisalign treatment. Then, we begin Invisalign treatment by taking dental impressions. Our team sends these impressions to a dental lab, creating a series of clear aligners.

Patients will wear the Invisalign aligners for 22 hours a day, even during sleep, to gradually shift teeth into a straighter position. Additionally, patients will switch out the aligners every two weeks and, over time, will notice that each new aligner set shifts their teeth.

Gradually adding pressure to the teeth with these aligners can fix mild or moderate orthodontic issues. Some patients also benefit from attachments bonded to specific problem teeth. Invisalign attachments pressure certain areas of the smile to encourage movement.

After you complete the Invisalign treatment, we will provide a retainer. Retainers prevent orthodontic relapse, ensuring your teeth stay straight and don’t shift. Patients who do not consistently wear their retainers can experience tooth gaps and crowding.

Invisalign FAQs

Do you have questions about the Invisalign treatment? Read answers to commonly asked questions to learn more:

Is Invisalign painful?

Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign often offers a more comfortable alternative. Orthodontists tighten and add new wires during regular visits, irritating the gum tissue. Invisalign aligners do not use materials that typically irritate or injure the gums. The aligners use clear plastic that conforms to the teeth.

Do you wear Invisalign aligners during sleep?

You need to wear Invisalign aligners 22 hours a day, only removing the aligners to eat and drink. If you clench and grind your teeth at night, you will require TMJ treatment to ensure you do not damage your aligners. We do not recommend Invisalign for TMD patients.

Does Invisalign address tooth gaps?

Yes, Invisalign can close gaps between teeth. Invisalign can easily close smaller tooth gaps, while bigger gaps can take longer. We will examine your smile to determine if you solely require Invisalign treatment to fix tooth gaps.

How do you clean Invisalign aligners?

Clean your teeth and Invisalign aligners before placing them back on your teeth. You can brush your aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush and liquid soap. Do not use hot water, as this can warp your trays.

How much is Invisalign?

The cost of Invisalign can vary. Generally, if you need more aligners or a longer treatment time, it may cost more. Many dental insurance plans cover part of the cost of Invisalign, so it’s a good idea to check with your insurance provider. Our dentist can give you a more accurate estimate based on your needs and treatment plan.

Who is not a candidate for Invisalign?

We do not recommend Invisalign treatment for patients with the following:

  • Severely crooked or overcrowded teeth
  • Gum disease
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Existing braces or dental appliances
  • Severe jaw issues

Dr. Morris will review your oral health and dental history before treatment to determine if Invisalign is right for you.

Is Invisalign faster than braces?

Invisalign can often be faster than traditional braces, but it depends on each person’s situation. On average, Invisalign treatment takes about 12 to 18 months. Traditional braces can take about 18 months to 3 years, based on how much work your teeth need. If you have mild dental issues, Invisalign might work faster. But braces might be more effective for more complicated problems.

You must also wear Invisalign aligners for about 20 to 22 hours a day and change them every couple of weeks. If you stick to the plan, you may see quicker results. If not, it can take longer.

What happens if you don’t wear Invisalign 20 hours a day?

If you don’t wear your Invisalign aligners for about 20 to 22 hours daily, your teeth may not move as quickly as they should. Also, when you put them back in, your aligners might not fit properly. This can cause discomfort and make it harder for your teeth to move as planned.

When you don’t wear your aligners consistently, your teeth might return to their original position. This can undo some of your progress.
